Matthew 6:19-21
Matthew 6:22-24
Matthew 6:25-34

Why shouldn’t I lay up for myself treasures upon earth, according to Matthew 6:19?

  • The material things on earth are temporal!
  • Your physical life on earth is temporal
  • Your soul and spirit are eternal!
  • Bodies die but spirits cannot die
  • Every material thing in this world (including jewellery) is dust
  • They are all hardware that perish and do not determine your eternal value
  • Your faith in Christ is much more precious than gold that perishes1 Peter 1:7 NKJV

How can I lay up for myself treasures in Heaven, according to Matthew 6:20?

  • You lay up treasures in Heaven by putting God first in all thingsMark 12:28-33
  • You lay up treasures in Heaven by making choices that honour and glorify God
  • You lay up treasures in Heaven by seeking and advancing the kingdom of God
  • The eternal value of all that you have is how you use them to serve, honour and glorify God, daily
  • Your attitude towards the things of God clearly reflects where your treasure is!
  • Stop sitting on the fence (If you know the right thing to do, do it!)
  • Habitual lateness to church meeting reflects a very poor attitude towards God
  • Are you putting God first in your time (attendance and punctuality), money (tithing and generous giving) and talents (volunteering and quality service)?

What is the danger of materialism, according to Matthew 6:21?

  • Materialism is the tendency to consider material things (possessions, comfort and pleasure) more important than spiritual things (worship, fellowship and service)
  • Materialism is defined as the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, 1 John 2:16
  • Many believers today have become materialistic and only wear their Christian Faith as a security badge!
  • Materialism is idolatry and idolatry always leads to immorality (i.e. the substitution of the rightful place of God as being the first priority in life always leads to the breaking of God’s laws)
  • Moderation and modesty (which reflects humility and submission) helps you to keep materialism under control in your life
  • Your faith in Christ is much more precious than gold that perishes1 Peter 1:7 NKJV

How can I rekindle my love?

  • The love between couples waxes cold when they start taking each other for granted
  • Familiarity breeds contempt; but it doesn’t have to if you can stay humble and grateful
  • Your love for God waxes cold when you start taking God for granted!
  • Poor attendance, habitual lateness and/or unfaithfulness in tithing is taking God for granted
  • The solution is repentance, humility and obedience!
  • Humble yourself, go back to your first love and start doing your first works
  • Revelation 2:4-5

How can I bring glory to God?

  • God is most glorified when you choose to honour Him in the middle of your constraints and challenges
  • God is looking for opportunities to boast about you to the devil!, Job 1:8
  • Whenever you choose to honour God in your choices and decisions, God is glorified and the devil is put to shame
  • Bringing glory to God releases and sustains His unadulterated blessings in your life
