What is the difference between living in the Spirit and walking in the Spirit?

  • Galatians 5:25
  • Living in the Spirit refers to being alive in the Spirit. This means that a person is born-again and has the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of them
  • John 3:6
  • Walking in the Spirit refers to following (acting on) the promptings of the Spirit
  • To live, you just need to breathe; to walk, you need to take steps

What is the master principle of walking in the Spirit?

  • Yielding!
  • Walking in the Spirit implies yielding to the promptings of the Holy Spirit
  • The Holy Spirit indwells and seeks to lead every true child of God; however your flexibility in being led by the Spirit (submitting, cooperating, following) determines if you will walk in the Spirit
  • Romans 8:14, Galatians 5:25
  • Stubbornness is the art of not yielding; a strong will (being strong-headed) is an hindrance to spiritual maturity
  • The more you yield (to the Word and the Spirit), the more you will grow unto spiritual maturity

  • Spiritual death leads to all other types of evil
  • A person receives spiritual life when they get born-again by making Jesus Christ their personal Lord and Saviour
  • If you are born-again, then your spirit is alive unto righteousness. However, your body is not born-again; it is still naturally subject to the side-effects of spiritual death (sinful desires, sickness, weakness, physical death)
  • In order to liver victoriously, you need to exercise the power of the spiritual life in your spirit to dominate your bodyRomans 8:13

What is the danger of walking in the flesh according to Romans 8:13?

  • Following the desires of the flesh (i.e. mind and body without God’s control) leads to spiritual death
  • Spiritual death starts with spiritual sickness, also known as carnality!
  • The carnal mind is enmity against God; to be carnally minded is death
  • Romans 8:5-8
  • Dying spiritually is progressive: the more you walk in the flesh, the more the spiritual darkness that will dominate your life

Can a ‘born-again’ Christian go to Hell?

  • A person that is born can die; a person that is born spiritually can also die spiritually
  • The key to spiritual life is abiding (remaining vitally connected) in obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ
  • The key to spiritual death is rebelling (remaining vitally disconnected) in disobedience to the Lord Jesus Christ
  • It is not just any sin that takes a Christian to Hell. It is the sin of rebellion against the conviction of the Holy Spirit (i.e. refusing to repent of your sin according to 1 John 1:9)
  • Repentance and Faith are keywords to maintaining spiritual life
  • John 15:6, 2 Timothy 2:12, Romans 8:5

How can you dominate (control) the flesh?

  • Believe the Word
  • Confess the Word
  • Practise (obey) the Word
