Dear Christian,

Now that you have been born-again by repenting of your sin, believing in Jesus Christ as your Saviour and confessing Him as your Lord, there are very important steps that you need to take in order to ensure steady spiritual growth. Always remember that the key to growing up spiritually is your consistency in following Jesus, with an ultimate goal of becoming like Him.

1. Study your Bible daily: The bible is the written word of God. It is true, alive and powerful. It renews your mind and feeds your spirit. Feeding your spirit is as important as feeding your body. Therefore, you should develop and maintain the habit of daily bible study. You can start from the new testament books, reading and meditating on the Word progressively, as much as you can daily. You can study with several versions of the Bible as these reveal different shades of meaning to the same message and help you to gain a fuller understanding. It is very important that you believe what the Word of God says about you and affirm such with your mouth and actions on a consistent basis. Give the Word first place in your life. (Matthew 4:4, 1 Peter 2:2, Joshua 1:8).

2. Pray always: Prayer is a two-way communication with God and this is something you should do every moment and at every opportunity. Talk to God about everything and listen to what He has to say to you. Enter His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise. Pray in line with God’s Word and you will begin to see the supernatural power of God working in your life. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Philippians 4:6-7).

3. Get filled with the Holy Spirit: The Word of God will feed your spirit and the Holy Spirit of God will quench your thirst. You cannot live an enriched, energetic Christian life without the help of the Holy Spirit. You need to get filled with the Spirit, with a continuous overflowing evidence of speaking in tongues, praying in tongues and singing in tongues. As you begin to welcome and acknowledge the Holy Spirit in all you do, you will experience rivers and springs of living water. (Acts 1:8, John 7:37-39).

4. Be part of a Church family: The importance of fellowship with other believers cannot be over-emphasized. Make sure to join a living church wherein the ‘Word and Spirit’ are of utmost importance. A church where the selfless overflowing Love of God is practised and a Faith walk in Christ, based on the promises of God’s Word, is actively encouraged. Don’t ever take Christian fellowship for granted. Your consistency in attending church meetings has a great impact on your spiritual growth. (Hebrews 10:25).

5. Spread the good news: Every believer is called to share the good news of the redemption that is available through our Lord Jesus Christ. Start with your family and friends. Tell them about how Jesus has delivered you from the dominion of darkness and how he is transforming your life. Invite them to believe in Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Invite them to church meetings so that they can experience what God is doing. Jesus said: ‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life’. This means that without Jesus, people are heading for eternal Hell. Jesus has come to give us abundant and eternal life. (Mark 16:15-16, John 10:10)

6. Honour the Lord: True worship is not just about singing melodious songs. It is about giving back your all to the one who gave His life for you. Honour the Lord and respect those He has set in spiritual and moral authority over you. Honour the Lord with your time, your talents and your money. Give your time and talents freely to kingdom ministry through the church. Nothing is too little or too much to do. Give your money in tithes (a tenth-part of your income), offerings and donations to your local church where you receive spiritual nourishment. As a minimum, your money will go towards church rent/maintenance, pastoral remuneration and fulfilling the Great Commission. Always remember that you’re giving to the Lord and everything you give is a seed which will yield its harvest of supernatural blessings in due time. (Proverbs 9:10, Proverbs 3:9-10, 1 Timothy 5:17-18).

7. Keep Eternity in focus: Don’t ever forget that this world is not your home. You only have a maximum of 120 years to spend here. This is only a drop in the ocean when compared to Eternity which is 10,000 years and forevermore. Always keep your focus on Jesus Christ. Serve the Lord. Run the heavenly race. Preach the Word. Submit to God and resist the devil. Repent quickly and forgive quickly. Do not turn cold or become lukewarm. Keep the fire burning. Remember that he who has the son and abides in the son has eternal life. He who has not the son does not have life. You can rest secure in God’s Love as you follow Jesus, because He who has called you is faithful. (Hebrews 9:27-28)

Loving You in Christ,

Dr Ben Awoseyila
